Julie Calbert
Julie Calbert is an artist who lives and works in Brussels. Although photography is at the centre of her approach, she approaches it as an alchemist, using various treatments and alterations that make the image rarefied, even absent. This abstract dimension
of her work is distinct from her practice of staging bodies: spectral silhouettes, furtive and often feminine apparitions, the resurgence of gestures, hands spawning faces that are never given. In this sense, Julie Calbert's work is as much mental as it is embodied. It conjures up unexpected narratives through the use of contrast, between the uneven materiality of her supports and the phenomenology of the spirits that run through them. Julie Calbert associates gleaned objects in the space of her installations with the images she designs, which participate in the sensitive deployment of her narratives. Her recent work tends towards a more radical abstraction
Her recent work tends towards an even more radical abstraction, at the very margins of the photographic film, in a gesture of pictorial purity, almost landscape-like. In parallel to her practice as an artist, Julie Calbert accompanies and produces images for numerous artists on the international music scene.
